Sridevi – The unmatched talent, self-made woman, awesome mom, devoted wife, superstar actress, and one of most beautiful women in the world. Almost whole of India and people all over the world were her fans. I mean how could one not be a fan of such an enchanted beautiful soul!
But on Feb 24th 2018 – The world stopped and everyone went in to immense shock and broke down when they learned about the saddening news of her untimely death! We were all praying that it would be announced as a hoax news. But sadly, it was not. Sridevi was “gone too soon” and it took lot of time to digest the fact that our first female indian superstar was now, “No more”
We as her fans feel the pain, we feel the loss, we feel the heart-break of not being able to see more of her amazing performances ever again. We always will miss her for a very long time! We can only imagine the pain and loss, her family and those who were close to her might be going through. The thought itself is heart-wrenching!
Today while we are writing a tribute focusing on all the hard work, all the beautiful movies Sridevi has left us with, as memories to remember her with her iconic performances, all our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who felt and are still feeling the pain of her loss.
While Bollywood and film industry of India and other parts of world are still fighting over the topic of women oriented role and empowering female-lead roles, Sridevi has already blazed a path down that road, played and conquered as the female lead in many films during her time as an actress. In the past, with her super comic timing and great acting ability, she was called the first female superstar ever since she gave powerful performances right from the start of her career.
Did you know? Well you might be already knowing it!
We will say it again, Sridevi started her acting career when she was 4! FOUR!! Wow!
And she played child-lead in the Tamil Movie – Thunaivan!
Also, she won her First award as Child artist awarded by Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist
Movie – Poompatta!
She played her first adult role at age 13 with the Tamil film – Moondru Mudichu (Did you also know that she was paid more than her co-star Rajinikanth back then for this movie?)
If we go on… We will have to make at least 10 posts to talk about all her 300 movies, Yes! You read that right! 300 movies in which she acted in various languages – Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi. We don’t call her a legendary actress just like that!
She was the perfect and finest actress of her time and also when she came back with – English Vinglish after her break in 2012, she left us in the same amazement and awe with her brilliant performance showing the pressure of a Mom, a wife and just a normal person who would need to learn and know the English language to be in trend of survival and have that respect which should have been “by default.”
Apart from movies she also left her mark in television portraying a south Indian tamil brahmin girl, who marries a punjabi guy, and how she manages to bring both the cultures together in and as Malini Iyer. It was a comedy series which was again never missed by her fans, and showered with lots of love for Sridevi’s comic role which left us in spilts of laughter with her accent and perfect comic timing.
To name a few best movies, where she played women-centric and lead roles for which she was conferred with many awards, rewards and recognitions are –
This movie was ahead of its time! Where Sridevi not only played a double role as both mother and daughter, but also was so bold in choosing to act in such movie that wouldn’t be well accepted by the society, and she killed it with her performance. For those who do not know why we are saying this, it was ahead of its time, let us enlighten you with gist of the story, Sridevi and Anil Kapoor fall in love but due to some reasons Sridevi doesn’t get married to Anil Kapoor but to some other person and after birth of her daughter she dies in a mishap, now the daughter (Played by Sridevi) grows up and falls in love with none other than Anil Kapoor. The movie didn’t only do well, but also won many awards and mainly brought in change in perspectives of so called “age gap” in love. (Which still is a stigma though but it did have it effect and change on those who were open-minded enough to understand and accept, then.)
#2 Khuda Gawah
Which was and still is one of Bollywood’s epic drama movies, where she also played a double role of both mother and daughter, and as versatile as she is, it was all very much evident on the silver screen. While one role was of an ardent lover and a lost, mad old woman waiting for her one true love Badshah Khan, played by Amitabh Bachchan (The legendary actor) and the other role portraying a lively yet a dedicated daughter, played opposite Akkineni Nagarjuna, the Telugu superstar in quest to find and get her father back home. This movie was the highest grosser as well as best of its time.
Here again we get bonus of double role acting by Sridevi. You could see all her comic sense and trust me, movie would have been lost without her. In this movie too, she played double-role as twin sisters. She topped the list of best actors playing double-roles opposite the best actors of that era, Sunny Deol and Rajnikant, the Enna Rascala “Mind it!” She rocked every scene of both sides of double role, one as innocent, simple homely girl and another as intelligent, clever and out-going girl, which was so wonderfully done that you actually see them as totally two different characters, and if you are wondering, yes! that’s what made her the legendary versatile actress.
Say what? You haven’t watched this movie? Just go watch now !! The acting in this movie is what real acting is! This is the movie that proves how finest actor Sridevi was !! Where she played lead role, opposite much acclaimed superstar of those days Kamal Hassan yet still Sridevi stole the show with her dedicated, super intriguing “make-believe” acting! It is a story about a woman, suffering from retrograde amnesia that leaves her with the memory and intelligence of a six or seven-year-old’s, how she is pushed into a brothel and how Kamal rescues her from there, and who eventually falls in love with her, but again leaves him heartbroken at the end, as she couldn’t remember anything about him once she regains her memory. Although it’s a heart-breaking movie but again ahead of its time, finest and award-winning movies and needless to mention Sridevi’s performance was highly laudable.
Uff!!! Who doesn’t know about this movie? I mean every Hindi movie fanatic just knows, this was one of the greatest Indian film of all time! The song “Chandani, O meri Chandani” still goes around viral in every one’s head, and be honest if you know it, you didn’t read that line but actually sung it! Right? I know!! And that’s why it is one of the most watched, iconic romantic musical movies, where she was ranked as No.1 Actress and also won a FilmFare award in the Best Actress category. And Yes! Yet again she played the lead with one of the best lead actors, of that era, Rishi Kapoor and Vinod Khanna. She didn’t just give her best performance but also mesmerised the audience by her amazing acting and her radiant beauty just like the chandini (Moonlight).
Ok, let me start with – “Kaate nahi Katte din ye raat! Kehni thi tumse jo ye dil ki baat… lo aaj mein kehti hoon…” How many of you, of us had this singing all time, just to ourselves or to confess about our love to someone in most filmy style ever! I am sure all of those who knew this song did at least once! This is one of the most iconic Bollywood movies, where Sridevi’s comic act as Charlie Chaplin is highly appreciated, till this day. From her dance numbers Hawa-Hawai to Kaate nahi katte, we can’t still stop imagining her look and can’t stop falling in love all over again with her sensuous goddess look in the latter song and total goofy comic act in former song. Mr India is one of the 100 great indian movies of all time. And in the days where gender equality was out of question and still is, regarding payment and status of women, Sridevi was then the highest paid actress ever of her era and this made women of that time proud and the future generation look upto her as an inspiration! (Cheers for Women Empowerment) Oh, how can I forget this – “Mogambo khush hua”
Already mentioned but worth mentioning again! Sridevi made her screen appearance back after 8 long years and she still won not just ours but also world-wide movie audience hearts with her struggle to learn English, just so she could impress her children. It was altogether a movie with all the emotions, rightly mixed and it was the best film of that year. (2012) Not just that, it was also short listed for Academy Awards, all and all just for amazing performance by the eternal diva, Sridevi.
Believe it or not! This was Sridevi’s 300th movie and it was lauded greatly and appreciated nationwide, once again for Sridevi’s power packed performance. And sadly, this was also Sridevi’s last movie. But what she left with us behind, is this gem of the movies, which is an action-packed thriller movie, of enthralling performance by Sridevi as MoM, who goes to unimaginable extent to avenge for her daughter. This movie brought in the title for Sridevi as “high-priestess of Indian cinema” we 200% resonate with it! Sridevi won the National Film Award in Best actress category and also a Filmfare award for her performance.
Like I said, if we begin with talking about her movies, we can just go on and on and on… apart from these movies there are many more where Sridevi played iconic roles mostly!
She won 13 Filmfare Awards for Best Actress.
She was honoured with Padma Shri India’s fourth highest civilian award from the Government of India in 2013.
In the same year, she was also honoured with President of India ‘Medallion of Honour’ for contribution to 100 Years of Indian Cinema.
And many more prestigious titles and honours and awards.
Sridevi was also included in 2018 in Memoriam section during the 90th Academy Awards ceremony.
If you haven’t watched her old movies, you should watch to know, what a true gem of an actress she was. We end our tribute on the greatest super star actress here in India and the world, saying,
“Sridevi Maam, may your soul rest in peace and you will always be remembered through all the wonderful treasure you left for us through your beautiful performances. You were always “The Superstar, A Diva, A Goddess” of the iconic roles, and you will always remain so. May you shine bright among the stars, even in the heaven.”
And today, being your birthday, we remember you more and miss your presence even more! We send you our love, respect and dedicated birthday wishes from Earth to Heaven! You shall always be alive in all of our favourite roles of yours and as our most adored superstar, in our hearts, our thoughts and movies!
Signing off with few lines of Hindi poetry written dedicated to Sridevi!
“Dharti mein khili
Tu tujhmei ek sitara thi
Dharti se aasman mein
Parwano ko chod gayi
Sitaro mein ja Basi
Aasman mein khil gayi.
Tu phir bhi, hamesa hamari sitara rahegi.”
