“Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”
“Nothing brings people together like good food!!”
These beautiful sayings represent the essence of food, the vital role it plays in our lives.
It is our sustenance, and the reason why people go to work and make a living.
It is deeply embedded in our ways of life, our culture, with it being the centre point of existence as we know it. Food is cooked in many different ways all around the world, with so many cuisines across communities. Nature’s bounty in the form of many varieties of vegetables, spices, seafood etc is magically transformed into mouth watering dishes by the deft hands of home cooks, chefs, foodies. It is a journey of discovery for foodies, to push the boundaries of dishing up the tastiest item on the table to be savoured and relished.
The end result is always smiles and happy stomachs!
As they say, after good food, one is almost tempted to forgive one’s enemies and relatives too!
Today on The Uncommon Box, we are featuring an exceptional chef, Swayampurna Mishra or Swayam. A banker who loves books, poetry and is yet to meet a piece of chocolate she doesn’t like and is an unabashed believer of the magic of rainbows! She is the author, recipe developer, photographer and sometimes the hand model of her charming food website Lapetitchef. Currently she is devoting all her time writing and photographing her debut cookbook which will be released worldwide in Jan 2019!! We cant wait for it and neither can her fans from what we see on her Instagram feed!
Talk of wearing so many hats all at once!! Awesome!!
Her blog reflects her philosophy:-
“Cooking is like Love. Enter into it with abandon, or not at all”- Julia Child.
And add to it her outlook on life and food:-
“Fun, Fast & Fabulous!”
“I cook from my memories. I cook from my heart. I cook food that moves me. I cook food that excites me and when I do enter the kitchen, I cook up quite a delectable storm!“
This is Swayam for you!!
Where did it all start? The Uncommon Box is curious!!
Let us hear it in her own words!
“My history with food began with having an exceptionally patient cook for a mother and evenings spent talking my heart out to my mom as she made dinner. The love for cooking that started since the age of nine has now become a way of life so much so, that if I go two days without cooking I feel restless.”
Are there Zen moments in the pursuit of her passion?
“A self taught photographer and food stylist, I find my moment of calm when I hold the camera in my hands”.
We all have our moments of calm and Zen, so Swayam hits the nail right on the head when she is busy managing different roles in her life and enjoying the precious moments that life offers as she says these heart warming words!!
“And when I’m not cooking , writing and clicking there’s a good chance you’ll find me running with my baby, pottering around in my garden, cuddling up close to my man, relaxing with yoga, reading a good book and chilling with a cup of coffee.
What is her style of cooking? We had to know!!
“My style of cooking is more instinctive, it’s free and liberating, focusing on well developed taste buds rather than relying on exact measurements.”
Swayam believes in creating simply with the best and freshest ingredients, experimenting with the old and venturing out to new unknown territories of the foodie realms. She is happy to make food that has the elements of joy, love, one delicious dinner story at a time!
Awesome!! Swayam surely has her heart in the right place!
What does Food mean to her?
We inquired and were blown away by her thoughts!
“Food is memories. Every post in the blog is accompanied by a dinner story because I feel good meals become unforgettable when you know the story behind it.”
“We should get nutrition, love and happiness through food.”
“Food is joy, and joy is food.”
Swayam explains to TUB what her blog is about…
“My blog is for anyone who’s looking for delicious yet easy recipes that won’t take forever to make or cost a fortune! It is perfect for working professionals and stay at home moms always pressed for time!”
“Apart from recreating old time classics when I give into nostalgic cooking, I also get bouts of healthy eating cravings! That is when you see me do healthy grills, variations of tikkas & salads.”
“I love trying out food that excites me and is out of my comfort zone.”
Swayam adores Italian and French cuisine and has worked upon recipes from around the world. Flavours are her playground, be it spice or chocolate, there is no guilty conscience there! She shares what she loves to eat!
Fast, easy and suited to the Indian palate, her food is the ultimate choice for people who want to push the boundaries of food.
Shh….Shh…did you know?!
Swayam lets us on a secret, her family and friends are her pack of experimental guinea pigs, so no one has to worry about the food, the taste and the aftermath!
It is all tried and tested before, talk of quality control at its best!
What is so different about her style of cooking that sets her apart from the rest of the cooking community?
The secret to her success!!
Wait for it!!
“Me following trends!! Nope!! Not going to happen!
“I don’t do cook or eat something just coz its fashionable or trendy to do so. Like when the entire Instagram was going gaga over monster shakes, I found the whole thing revolting and highly impractical. As a result you don’t see that on my feed. And don’t get me started on turmeric latte aka haldi doodh!”
Swayam doesn’t do calorie counts! She believes in cooking healthy grilled food, salads, dressings and baked appetizers. A great believer in desserts, you will find many luxurious and sinful recipes in the blog to soothe the sugary cravings one gets from time to time!
And remember her words!
“I am as I am, and proudly so.”
‘You will never find me compromising on the taste of the food in any way.”
“Not oats and porridge!”
“And no apology or guilt!”
We love her!! Don’t we?!!
We simply adore the way Swayam has involved her whole family into her pursuit of excellence in the field of gastronomy!
Read on in her own words, it is pretty inspiring!
