The sheer variety of genres in Photography creates adequate space for a variety of creative expressions through visuals.
Wedding photography is one such challenging genre. It is unique in the sense that it is at once an intensely public event as well as a private memory.
It is the skill and expertise of the wedding photographer to capture both. Here is Uncommon photographer Avismita Bhattacharya, who presents some different facets from her wedding photography portfolio.
These 9 photo stories capture simultaneously the social and personal aspects of the incredible bond between two people.
#1 The bride shares a light moment with her elder sister on the morning of the wedding
A wedding is a gallery of countless memories. There are countless emotions attached to it as well. The childlike glee of the bride is so well captured here by Avismita, as her elder sister fastens the traditional tiara on her head.
#2 A glimpse from the Haldi ceremony
Avismita takes a unique perspective on a ritual that is an integral part of weddings- the Haldi ceremony. A symbol of the auspicious, haldi or turmeric has medicinal value. The bride and groom are pampered with these natural treatments and there are much fanfare and fun.
#3 Another ritual from the Haldi ritual
The beautifully vermillion lined and henna-ed feet of the bride have been captured here as she follows a symbolic ritual associated with the ending of her days of spinsterhood. These are the first steps towards a life from Me to We.
#4 A stolen portrait of the bride right after she is readied for the ceremony
How can one fathom the feelings of the bride- royally decked in the finest of jewelry and attire, as she readies herself for the big moment that will alter lives forever? Avismita captures a lovely candid portrait of the demure and a little pensive bride, as she adjusts a tiny detail of her sari.
#5 With dreams in her eyes and a hope in her heart
That monochrome of the bride can be as stunning as coloured photographs, is amply proved here. The shy and happy smile of this bride and the look of hope for the future that shines in her eyes are admirably captured by Avismita. Her entire ensemble looks as stunning in black and white as it would have in colour.
#6 Pure Happiness
Who said that brides have to only be coy and nervous? Here is a picture depicting the sheer happiness of a young heart in love with the moment in her life, she looks forward to with delight. The reveling in the queenly lehenga, and the heavy jewelry, make it for a fairytale moment.
#7 Waiting…
Here is another stunning capture of the bride caught in a moment of thought and feeling, as she waits for the man to whom she has sworn her life and love. Avismita effectively captures the mood through the softened tones in this capture.
#8 The Bridal Sandals
A simple monochrome can capture so many stories. The bridal sandals, caught here in a silhouette, creating patterns all of its own, much like the journey of the bride into a new family and home.
#9 Vidaai – Farewell
One of Avismita’s most awarded photographs is this stunning capture of an intensely emotional moment when the tearful bride looks up at her father, whose palms lean on the glass window of the car that is ready to leave. That lingering look of the bride, that tear-stained face, and the yearning of the father expressed through his palms, these make for an incredible photo memory.
“Weddings truly are amazing and of late, they have become opportunities for a storytelling that is unique and very compelling.”
Avismita’s brilliance shines through every single capture here.
For a photographer who began with nature and macro photography, Avismita continues to dazzle with her incredible wedding captures. She says, ‘I believe that at the end of the day a photograph has to talk to you. As a photographer, I want to portray their emotion through my images and after twenty, thirty or fifty years later when they will look back at their wedding photographs, they will be reminded of the precious moment of their wedding.’
She advises budding photographers to stay true to their vision and keep clicking. Not one to be overcome by challenges, she says, ‘Photography is my Passion and Profession. Obviously, I have a dream, I want to see myself successful in this profession. Moreover, I want people to remind my work.’
We at The Uncommon Box are sure that Avismita’s dreams are well on their way to the realization…
