Short films are quite the trend now on YouTube and have carved a niche for themselves because they pack in a punch in the shortest amount of time.
Written and directed by Devashish Makhija starring Nimrat Kaur, Divyendu Sharma and Viba Chibber, El’ayichi was chosen among the 5 short films exclusively screened at the 1st edition of the ‘Terribly Tiny Talkies’ initiative.
Devashish Makhija began his career in the Indian film industry as a researcher and assistant director on the critically acclaimed film Black Friday in 2004, the feature-film directorial debut of Anurag Kashyap. In the following year, he was also the chief assistant director to Shaad Ali on the blockbuster Bunty Aur Babli.
This short film El’ayichi, is a quirky black comedy about a wife who is still haunted by her dead husband and carries on conversations with him. The urban setting of this film, along with a super performance by the amazing Nimrat Kaur , make for a film viewing experience that leaves you amused and a little spooked but also, ends with a subtle message of choosing life anew.
The power of choice is amply suggested here. We make choices based on different reasons- societal pressures, personal or emotional reasons- and in the process, we lose what we want. The protagonist played by Nimrat makes a choice and that is the crux of the entire story.
This is a must watch short film!
