It is truly unfortunate how our society has been structured throughout the years. More so, it’s ironical how even after being recognized legally as equal, there are still restrictions placed on a woman’s life.
“Women have been often excluded from mainstream society for years but the tide seems to be turning now.”
An increasing number of people are realizing and recognizing the importance of women empowerment and we hope for more such initiatives coming together to eliminate gender discrimination.
Here is the short musing in form of a rant from our Uncommon writer Poonam Tilekar on the vicious circle in a woman’s life.
I am a woman- these are the stages of my life!
On being born – Society says, Oh! It’s a girl.
The moment I am born, society limits my credibility saying ‘it’s a girl’. I am looked upon as a weaker gender without even noticing my abilities.
I am asked to look upto men for my security without even knowing my strengths.
On growing – I am shown my future.
I am not given a chance to select what field I would like to work in.
It is decided by society without judging my intelligence and potential.
On being married – I am taken for granted.
Once I reach a stage where I want to dream, I want to achieve many milestones, I am told it is the age of marriage; I fail to understand what does marriage have to do with my dreams?
It is assumed I have to take care of the family, the extended family and all relatives, and not to get hurt or offended when it comes to the compromises I have to make.
On having a career – I am looked upon as negligent of my household duties.
Being a working woman, I have been asked to perform all duties of a fulltime home maker as it is ‘my’ responsibility to look after the home. Being the ‘lady’ of the house, I am expected to looking after all the household chores inspite of being tired and sick.
Change the perception:
While I agree that things are changing for betterment and welfare of women, females are now stronger and successful in everything do.
Thanks to the men who believe that women are at par with them.
Thanks to the women who have confidence in themselves and have achieved success to become role models for the next generation.
Thanks to the society that helps everyone grow with equality.
I have the ocean of opportunities, I have sky of dreams..
Let me swim through the difficulties and let me fly high!
A woman, inspite of being strong, opinionated and independent still has to find a foothold in this male- driven society. Why is it that it’s always her who makes sacrifices atevery stage in her life?? In today’s era of true transformation and upliftment, a woman needs co-operation and support in her life – not because she is weak but for her to treated as an equal and given a chance to live her own dreams.
We at The Uncommon Box believe that it’s high time EVERYONE understands that men and women are equal.
